*You can also try manually adding the following text to \bin\config\base\general.ini file: US/UK: § or ` (not to be confused with the ' key) *Having trouble getting the console to even open? Try one of these keys: **Here are a few other Console tips for newbies like me!** You never know how far along someone is in a learning process and your questions/answers might make all the difference. Consider offering details you might think of as 'obvious' when someone is asking for help. So I'm spreading (lengthy) awareness to hopefully save someone else the headache by making the information easier to find.Ī take away from this is to never assume someone is doing something, even if its 'basic', the same way you do. Once I knew what I was looking for I searched the issue on Google again, this time with specific wording, and still came up with lots of people having the same problem but only ONE person deep within a Nexus thread stated that the CapsLock button won't work.
I guess it's just a matter of the way someone learned to type and the patterns they use everyday. It may not even occur to those of us who fall into that category to use the Shift key as a needed alternative. Now some of you might be like "duh, of course!" but I am 100% confident that there are others like me who practically never use the Shift key in everyday typing and were trained to use the CapsLock button by default.
I've now got the Tweaks mod (yes it has the console enable option but no freecam), Friendly Hud, and the Freecam and Debug Console mod (I don't know of another way to have freecam) working together.Īfter I got it "fixed" I made an inquiry as to whether or not it was 'common' knowledge that CapsLock doesn't work and that you have to use the shift key in order to use upper case letters? I mean is that why no one says "Hey, this is what you're doing wrong." because they assume that someone had already tried using the shift key?
So I tried it out and it WORKED!! I've slowly been adding mods back in and testing the console every time and so far haven't had any issues. It wasn't until someone else suggested I look to see if I had my shift key set as a hotkey to something thus interfering and making the case 'stuck' that I realized that I hadn't tried using the Lshift at all (simply by my default thinking I relied on the CapsLock to work as expected). It was suggested that I just Ctrl C / Ctrl V (from an out of game document into the in-game opened console) and that worked but it felt like a band-aid fix and I still wanted to get to the source of the problem. (To be clear the console worked fine in terms of doing any commands that did not require a capitol letter but something like additem('Horse Saddle 4') would not do anything because the H & S were always being typed in lower case.) Save the file and run the game - you will now be able to access the console with the ~ (tilde) key. Open your \The Witcher 3\ttings file and insert this text at the beginning: I was super freaking frustrated but determined to fix it so I eventually uninstalled/reinstalled my game and followed these directions on a completely vanilla game: I tried EVERYTHING that came to mind for troubleshooting (checked tons of comments sections/bug reports, googling, re-reading tons of mod descriptions looking for conflict warnings, disabling ALL of my mods) NOTHING fixed it! I came across plenty of people having the same/similar issues and LOTS of "this mod doesn't work" comments on various mods that either enabled or required console commands but NO fixes. On/Off didn't matter, it was always 'stuck' in lowercase. The CapsLock button just would not toggle between the cases. Only when I tried I couldn't because I could't get my letters to capitalize.
Since this was my first time ever using the debug console I did some research and found a cheat sheet of codes and the tips that they are case sensitive and need to be EXACT.
It wasn't until I tried an additem command that I had any issues with not getting the expected results. So at first I didn't notice any 'problems' with the console because I was mainly just using the enabler mod (Freecam and Debug Console for 1.32 Patch) for the FreeCam and to spawn characters (such as Yennefer or Triss) to test appearance mods. The CapsLock button WILL NOT work in the console, you HAVE to use the Shift key to capitalize letters. TLDR: Codes/commands are case sensitive and have to be typed in EXACTLY as directed. (I've posted this on Nexus but I'm hoping the re-post here helps reach more people having the same problem.) For anyone having issues with the console opening BUT some commands not working, this post MIGHT help you.
